Rhythm & Eurhythmics

A Five-Day Calligraphy Workshop
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Join Denis Brown in a workshop that delves deep into the world of rhythm in calligraphy. This five-day workshop will explore various aspects of rhythm, from italic with gestural pen manipulations to abstract calligraphies. Drawing analogies with music, participants will gain a new understanding of rhythm in calligraphy.

The workshop will be divided into three main sections:

1. Rhythm in Italic (2 Days).
Participants will engage in disciplined exercises focusing on structural rhythm in italic. Techniques such as pen flicks and fast manipulated strokes will be explored to enhance fluency. While mastery of these techniques may take time, the workshop aims to introduce new dynamics of calligraphy that can be practiced and incorporated into one's own work.
The italic module is offered separately as the class Advanced  Italic.

2. Calligraphic Composition (2 Days)
A deep dive into the rhythm of composition in calligraphy. Participants will analyze both modern and old master paintings to gain insights into compositional rhythms in art. This awareness will be translated into exercises that demonstrate the relevance of compositional rhythms to calligraphic design. The workshop will focus on creating new spaces by strategically dividing the picture plane with lines of writing. This specialized composition module is available as a standalone class titled Experimental Composition.

3. 'Playing' Abstract Calligraphy (1 Day)
The workshop will culminate in a day of exploring abstract calligraphy set to rhythmic audio and music. This session will offer a creative and experimental space for participants to apply the rhythmic principles learned throughout the week.

Don't miss this opportunity to expand your understanding of rhythm in calligraphy and discover new possibilities for your artistic practice
