In this workshop, participants will delve into the world of Italic calligraphy, focusing on a unique form with high-sprung, symmetric arches.
What to Expect
Participants will receive an introduction to Italic theory and will have the opportunity to practice the specific Italic form being taught. Through a detailed exploration of structure, rhythm, and fluency, students will gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of Italics. Denis Brown, a master in the field, will provide insightful critiques and debunk common myths with his signature blend of clarity and humour.
Participants will begin to develop a solid foundation in letterform, learning to identify common issues and maintain consistency in their work. Denis' expert analysis will help students avoid typical mistakes and refine their pen manipulation techniques. The workshop will also demonstrate the dynamics of acceleration/deceleration in lettering to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal.
Student supplies required
To make the most of the workshop, students are advised to bring square edged dip-pens (Brause size 3mm & 4mm recommended), ink, ruler, pencils, masking tape, practice paper, gouache, brushes, and quality paper such as Arches Text Wove or BFK Rives. Additionally, students may find it helpful to have a smartphone with a camera to document demonstrations for reference at their table.
