This workshop combines Denis Brown's energetic italics with Gothic characteristics, resulting in a contemporary and dynamic form of calligraphy. Students will be introduced to Denis' theory of italic calligraphy, encouraging them to understand forms rather than simply replicate them. Advanced pen techniques will be taught to bring these forms to life.
The term "Gothic" encompasses a broad spectrum of styles, ranging from Texturas to Bastarda cursives and modern Gothicized Italics. An extended 5-day workshop might cover various styles tailored to different levels, from beginners to advanced. A three-day workshop will include capital letters, while a two-day version will sufficiently cover lowercase letters, with an discussion and brief demonstration of capitals.
Required Student Supplies
Square-edged dip pens (Brause size 3mm & 4mm particularly recommended, along with students' preferred brands) - Ink - Ruler - Pencils - Pad of practice paper (A3 size or 11" x 17") - Gouache - Palettes - Mixing and loading brushes - One or two quality paper sheets such as Arches Text Wove or BFK Rives Optional: Many students find it helpful to use a smartphone with a camera to capture demonstrations for practicing at their tables.
