The workshop will focus on the Foundational hand, which has been a fundamental style in the English calligraphy tradition. 

Developed from the late Carolingian manuscript Ramsey Psalter, this hand provides a solid foundation for understanding letter forms through its theory of form and spacing. While we will explore its historical origins, we will practice a modern variation. Denis Brown will guide participants through the intricate details of the Foundational hand, emphasising principles that go beyond just a style.

Required Student Supplies

Square edged dip pens (Brause size 3mm & 4mm recommended) - Ink - Ruler - Two matching HB pencils and masking tape for double pencils - Additional pencil for ruling guidelines - Pad of practice paper A3 size or 11" x 17" - Gouache, palettes, mixing, and loading brushes - A sheet of quality paper such as Arches Text Wove or BFK Rives - Optional: Smartphone for capturing demonstrations to copy at your desk.
