The main image is sumi ink on polyester drafting film. This translucent sheet is laid over another sheet with the word 'THINK' in calligraphy; which was written onto paper while wet. The word 'flow' was added in a free cursive after the paper dried. The small calligraphy at top, 'FOLLOW' and at bottom 'THEINKFLOW' is also on the underlying paper and shows through the translucent polyester film. In white gouache, on top of the sumi painting, the word 'follow' has been freely written. Also in white gouache on the polyester film, 3 letters of the underlying words have been 'x'-d out... thus 'FOLLOW' is changed to 'F-LOW' and 'THEINKFLOW' is changed to 'TH-INKFLOW'
The work plays on the potential of calligraphy both to be abstract gesture without semantic meaning, (ink-flow); yet also for conceptual elements to be embedded (think-flow). Flow and fluency as principles in both calligraphy and psychology are alluded to. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has defined flow as 'the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter.' *
