Click in the image for a huge enlargement to open in a new window E N K A U S T O S SOLD Text A quotation from the poem We Learned by Erica Jong is written in white cursive at the base of the work: 'We learned the decorum of fire'. The word ENKAUSTOS is written black calligraphy on the background paper just above the quotation.
Ink was dropped onto wet polyester film and encouraged to spread. Small drops of gloss black paint have ben added. You can read more about the process here.
Concept ENKAUSTOS: This Greek word meaning to burn is related to ENKAUSTON, from which the word INK derives: the black liquor with which men write [Johnson]. The image here may be considered a calligraphy whose word has dissolved in the ink that wrote it, a word whose semantic meaning has been 'burnt out' and replaced by an image of this burning. Signature: Brown 2007, in pencil on the film at lower right.
Detail showing white cursive script on the polyester film, and black uncials showing through from behind. Small stitches between the capitals attach the film to the background paper.
