Calligraphy in Mixed Media by Denis Brown/h1>
These works were mostly made in the 1990s as part of a rebellion against the Catholic dogmas I'd been raised on. I reappraise this theme, among many others, in my new book. It involved both creation and the subsequent creation of destruction. In art as well as in nature, destruction can often be a prerequisite of true creation. Making manuscripts and then obliterating or otherweise attacking them was quite thrilling! One of the works here, a burnt sheet of vellum bearing a gospel text, was filmed in the making this year, to be part of publicity films for the book.
