Calligraphy on both sides of translucent tracing paper, stretched drum tight over a canvas stretcher and with further calligraphy on paper showing through from behind.

The Greek/Latin text derives from a phrase by Juvenal: 'An incurable itch for scribbling [cacoethes scribendi] takes possession of many, and grows inveterate in their insane breast.'

 


In this detail, the background grrens blur towards the left hand side but are more clear at the right, where the background paper was raised to touch the tracing paper. This gives a particular depth and opalescence to the surface..
